Gareth Southgate was appointed England U21s Head Coach in August 2013. During his period in charge of the Young Lions, the former Middlesbrough manager has overseen England’s qualification for the 2015 U21 European Championship’s in the Czech Republic - winning five and drawing one of six qualification games.
At December’s FA Licensed Coaches’ Club conference the former England defender provided an insight into the coaching methods used with the U21 squad and how this approach to practice will be adopted by all England’s youth teams.
In this five part FA Licensed Coaches’ Club Masterclass series Southgate focuses on creative attacking play and breaking down a compact defence.
The focus of part one of the Masterclass is a possession practice in restricted space challenging the players to play through tight areas with the aim of releasing an attacking player into one of the end zones.
